Review - Lime Crime Eyeshadow Helper Primer OLD vs NEW

Lime Crime Candy Eyed Primer has been my go to eyeshadow primer for years, I have never come across anything available on the market that works anywhere near as good. I love that it is affordable, intensity my eyeshadows, gives 24hr wearing time (and I hate to admit that I did test that out by sleeping with it on for research purposes) and also helps aid with adhering loose pigments. I loved that this product was in a gorgeous little teal tub with a screw top lid and it always stood out in my stash.

Lime Crime Candy Eyed Helper Old vs New

Lime Crime has recently 'reformulated and repackaged' my trusty faithful primer. At first, I was annoyed. I liked the product as it was and didn't want anything changed. But I did start to come around when I saw that it was a new tube packaging and more product for the same price. I wanted to do a post comparing the old product and the new to see if it performs the same and if the new packaging really does give you more bang for your buck. Here are my findings!

This primer is a skin colour super sticky base that is easily spread over your lids. I never had problems with creasing shadows or really any problems at all ever since I started using it.

Here is my comparisons -

  • Still the same price at $16.99
  • Old Packaging contained 7gms of primer vs the New Packaging 10gms of Primer
  • Old Packaging was screw top tub whereas New Packaging is a squeeze tube
  • Old Packaging was Cruelty Free whereas New Packaging is Vegan and Cruelty Free

(L - R) New Formula vs Old Formula

Now to the formula

With the promise of it being reformulated but still working the same, I found that the old packaging you only ever used the tiniest bit on your finger to place on your lids and I would get around a year out of each tub. That is using it on myself every day as well as all my clients! The formula was thick and tacky and matched my skin tone perfectly.

The new formula is a little more pink colouring and I found myself using more because of the squeeze tube. The formula is not as thick as the old packaging and while it still does intensify my eyeshadows as you can see by the picture below, it makes them darker. I think this is down to the fact that the product is not as tacky and while its not runny, it is more softer consistency.

Pigment applied with - No Primer, New Lime Crime & Old Lime Crime
It still had great wearing time but (yes there is a but) I did notice there was a little fading with intense eyeshadow and only a little creasing by the end of the day. I apply my makeup at 630am and remove it after 7pm each night so it is still putting up a great effort.

I will still keep purchasing this product, I will be honest that it still still a heap better than Urban Decay Primer Potion and Too Face Shadow Insurance (which I found out the hard way I am allergic to!). I still believe that the product was perfect as it was and didn't need any extra tweaks but I can live with the new.

You can purchase this product from Lime Crime directly www.limecrimemakeup.com and they do post internationally.

Peace and Love,

    1. Thankyou! The new packaging is cute but I do love the old in comparison as far as stretching out the product

  4. I think I still prefer the old primer a little more, but maybe I just hate change when it's a good thing! looking forward to trying out the new primer though.

    1. Personally I am with you, I think the old was perfect as it was and the difference in the consistency of the formula does change the effectiveness only a little but I can deal with the new and still swear by this product
